Thomas Woods-Tucker

Thomas S. Tucker, Ph.D., serves as the Kentucky Department of Education's deputy commissioner and its first chief equity officer.

Tucker has 36 years of experience in public education. During his career, he has held the positions of classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of secondary curriculum and superintendent. He twice has been named National Superintendent of the Year (American Association of School Administrators in 2016, and National Alliance of Black School Educators in 2013). He is passionate about ensuring the needs of the underprivileged and those with special needs are being met.

Tucker also is well-versed in school finance and business partnerships. He often has been called upon by local and state lawmakers to consult regarding funding issues.

Tucker earned his doctorate and master's degrees from The Ohio State University and his bachelor's degree from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark. He is an active member of many educational associations, civic organizations and committees, including the National Alliance of Black School Educators, the American Association of School Administrators and Blessings in a Backpack.​
